Ultra Sound General Abdominal Scan

Abdominal ultrasound can be used to diagnose quite a number of conditions. These include diseases that affect the gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, liver etc. Another condition that uses this method is abdominal aortic aneurysm. It occurs in abdominal aorta, which is the artery that supplies blood to the lower trunk. This blood vessel passes through the abdomen. The disease is characterized by a bulging, weakened spot in the abdominal portion.

The diagnostic procedure to detect this disorder is used for those older people (in their 60's or 70's) who are/were having the habit of tobacco use. For those who have smoked atleast 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, this is a must. The other risk factors for this disease include a history of atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, chronic pulmonary disease etc.

Before the procedure, it is essential to fast for 8-12 hours on an average. This is due to the fact that fluids in the stomach can make the imaging difficult. Consultation with a doctor is essential regarding the amount of water that needs to be taken. The entire procedure only takes about 20 minutes to complete. During the procedure, the patient is made to lie down comfortably, after which a particular gel is applied. The gel facilitates air-pocket elimination between the transducer and the skin. The transducer is the instrument that is employed to the clearly see the aorta. The results of the test are the carefully interpreted by the doctor.
